Greenland Mines hires WSP Denmark for Sarfartoq environmental studies
Greenland Mines Ltd (NASDAQ: GRML) has engaged WSP Denmark to conduct the second year of environmental baseline studies at its Sarfartoq rare earth project in southwest Greenland, according to a company statement.
The program will build on environmental baseline work WSP Denmark completed in 2023 for Neo North Star Resources, Inc., which included terrestrial, freshwater, marine and fisheries sampling, water-flow monitoring and ecological surveys conducted under Greenland's mineral-sector Environmental Impact Assessment guidelines.
The 2026 field program is expected to focus on follow-up baseline work and monitoring activities, including additional sampling and data collection across environmental receptors. The company stated that multi-year baseline investigations are commonly required in Greenland to capture natural variability prior to potential development.
"We are very pleased to continue working with WSP Denmark at Sarfartoq," said Bo Møller Stensgaard, president of Greenland Mines. "The same experienced team that is currently supporting environmental work at Skaergaard in East Greenland also carried out the first year of environmental baseline studies at Sarfartoq in 2023, so there is strong project familiarity and continuity."
WSP Denmark is also currently engaged by Greenland Mines on environmental work related to the company's Skaergaard Project in southeast Greenland. The company said using the same environmental consulting group across both Greenland projects supports consistency in execution, field protocols and knowledge transfer.
The Sarfartoq project is a carbonatite-hosted rare earth project focused on neodymium and praseodymium, elements used in permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and defense systems. Previous work at the site includes a mineral resource estimate, a preliminary economic assessment completed in 2011, drilling, metallurgical test work and environmental baseline studies.
