Bitdeer breaks ground on $155 million Alberta facility

June 2, 2026 8:04 AM

Bitdeer Technologies Group (NASDAQ: BTDR) broke ground on a $155 million energy and computing facility near Fox Creek, Alberta, the company announced. The project combines a 101 megawatt natural gas power plant with a data center offering approximately 100 MW of computing capacity.

The ceremony included Bitdeer executives, Alberta Cabinet Ministers, and local officials. The facility represents Bitdeer's long-term investment in Alberta's energy and digital infrastructure sector, with energization planned for the second quarter of 2027.

The project is expected to create 300 construction jobs and 30 permanent positions. Under Alberta's bring-your-own-generation framework, the data center will be powered directly by the on-site plant rather than drawing from the electrical grid.

"We chose Alberta — and Fox Creek in particular — because it is one of the few places in the world that combines regulatory confidence, openness to industrial investment, energy resources, and a skilled workforce that projects like ours require," said Jihan Wu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bitdeer.

The facility will initially support Bitcoin mining operations but is designed with flexibility for future high-performance computing workloads, including artificial intelligence applications. The project acquired regulatory approval through the Alberta Utilities Commission and operates under permits from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas.

The 7.7-hectare site includes a closed-loop dry-cooling system and plans for carbon dioxide capture from power generation. Bitdeer acquired the fully licensed site in February 2025 from a project originally developed by Kiwetinohk Energy Corp.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the province is positioning itself as a destination for AI data center investment, citing abundant natural gas supply and power industry capacity.
