American Water completes $315 million Nexus Water Group acquisition
American Water Works Company Inc. (NYSE: AWK) completed its acquisition of water and wastewater systems from Nexus Regulated Utilities LLC for approximately $315 million, the company announced.
The acquisition adds about 47,000 customer connections across eight states where American Water already operates: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. The company also welcomed approximately 70 employees from Nexus Water Group affiliates.
"American Water is excited about this acquisition as we believe it is good for customers and another example of execution of our core growth strategy," said John Griffith, president and CEO of American Water.
American Water initially announced the agreement to acquire the systems on May 19, 2025. The transaction received regulatory approvals from state public utility commissions and other governmental entities by May 21, 2026.
The company stated it will provide transition information to new customers through mail communications from their respective American Water state subsidiaries. Customer information is available on a dedicated webpage on the company's website.
New customers will gain access to American Water's online account management portal, MyWater, along with flexible payment options and customer assistance programs for qualifying customers needing bill payment help.
American Water operates as the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, serving approximately 14 million people across 14 states and 18 military installations.
