IMAX partners with Asian Cinemas for three new theaters in India

June 1, 2026 7:31 AM

IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) announced an agreement with Asian Cinemas to open three new IMAX with Laser locations in India through the AMB Cinemas brand, according to a company statement.

Two locations will open in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state and a center for Telugu-language film production. The first theater at AMB Classic in Hyderabad is scheduled to open before the end of 2026, with the remaining two locations planned for 2028.

The agreement marks IMAX's return to Hyderabad after a decade-long absence. The city's previous IMAX location at Prasads closed in 2015.

"2025 was our best year ever at the box office in India – powered by a dynamic slate of Hollywood and Indian films — and our strong performance is driving demand among new and existing exhibition partners in the region," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.

IMAX reported that India generated a record $25.6 million in box office revenue for 2025, including nearly $8 million from international content. The company has expanded its presence in India by nearly 60% since 2020 to 34 open locations, with at least four more expected to open this year.

The new theaters will feature IMAX with Laser technology, which delivers 4K images and enhanced audio through custom-designed projection systems. India has ranked among IMAX's top ten markets for the past decade.

Asian Cinemas operates under the leadership of Narayandas K. Narang and launched the AMB Cinemas brand in 2018 in collaboration with actor Mahesh Babu Ghattamaneni.
