Japanese automakers see mixed April production results

May 29, 2026 9:10 AM

Investing.com -- Japanese automobile manufacturers produced 1.96 million vehicles globally in April 2026, marking a 1% increase compared to the same month last year, according to Morgan Stanley analysis.

Domestic production in Japan reached 651,000 units, up 8% year-over-year, while overseas production totaled 1.31 million units, down 2% from April 2025.

Morgan Stanley assessed the implications for the auto parts industry as neutral. The firm noted that while exports to the Middle East declined sharply, the impact on domestic production has been limited so far, with domestic earnings at parts suppliers remaining firm.

The analysis identified potential risks ahead, noting that automobile production could face constraints if logistics disruptions affect supplies of naphtha-based resin materials.

Individual automaker performance varied in April. Toyota's global production rose 2% year-over-year, while Honda fell 1%, Nissan dropped 5%, and SUBARU declined 9%. Suzuki posted an 11% gain, Mazda increased 4%, and Mitsubishi Motors rose 1%.

Chinese production at Honda and Nissan both saw double-digit declines. Morgan Stanley suggested this raises the possibility that additional measures, such as fixed-cost reductions, may be required at the Chinese operations of parts suppliers.
