Investing.com -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Rivian over a potential defect in the rear toe link that could cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

The probe covers approximately 115,000 R1 electric pickups and SUVs and was triggered by two complaints from owners who experienced the suspension rod separating, causing their vehicles to swerve across multiple lanes. One incident resulted in a collision.

Rivian is cooperating with the NHTSA but stated its own data shows the toe links are functioning as intended. The company said it does not believe the component is responsible for the two incidents.

Earlier this year, Rivian recalled nearly 20,000 vehicles due to issues with the same part.
