Avangrid signs 140 MW solar power deal with Microsoft in Washington
Avangrid Inc. announced a power purchase agreement with Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) for the 140 megawatt-dc Bluebird Solar project in Klickitat County, Washington. The agreement brings the total energy capacity under contract between the two companies to more than 500 MW in the United States.
The Bluebird project represents the fourth U.S. energy contract between Avangrid and Microsoft. Previous agreements include Powell Creek Solar in Ohio and Camino Solar in California, which began commercial operation in 2025, and Juniper Canyon Wind in Washington, expected to start operations this year.
Construction of the solar facility is expected to create approximately 300 jobs, with most positions filled by local union labor. The project is anticipated to contribute about $11 million in local property taxes over its lifetime and support several permanent jobs for long-term operations and maintenance.
"Bluebird Solar builds on our longstanding commitment to energy development and operations in Washington, bringing meaningful economic benefits to Klickitat County," said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda.
The project represents a $300 million investment in the community and is located near four other Avangrid energy projects in Klickitat County. Commercial operation is expected to begin in 2028.
Avangrid, a member of the Iberdrola Group, operates over 11 GW of installed capacity across a 25-state portfolio that includes nearly 100 energy projects. The information is based on a company press release.
