American Airlines maintains profit outlook amid rising fuel costs

May 27, 2026 9:46 AM

Investing.com -- American Airlines is maintaining its full-year profit outlook despite a sharp increase in fuel prices, CEO Robert Isom said at a Bernstein investor conference on Wednesday. The carrier is being supported by stronger revenue, premium demand and corporate travel, which are helping to offset rising oil costs.

Isom said demand showed a K-shaped pattern, with higher-income travelers outpacing middle- and lower-income customers.

Travel is growing across income groups, with American about 80% booked for the second quarter, Isom said. Corporate travel is up 13% year over year and leisure demand is strong.

The company also saw an immediate increase in basic economy bookings after low-cost carries Spirit Airlines collapsed several weeks ago, Isom added.
