Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: LABT) received patent approvals in Australia and New Zealand for the gel formulation of its antimicrobial compound Nu-3, according to a company statement.

IP Australia granted Patent Number 2024202211 on March 19, while the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand granted patent number 759577 on February 3. Both patents are titled "Bisphosphocin Gel Formulations and Uses Thereof."

The patents cover the gel formulation of Nu-3, which the company is developing for treating mildly infected diabetic foot ulcers. The topically applied gel contains lyotropic liquid crystals designed to adhere to wounds through hydrogen bonding to water.

The new patents bring the total number of granted patents for the Nu-3 gel formulation to 27, spanning the United States, European Patent Office countries, India, Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. The company's overall patent portfolio includes 71 granted patents and 28 pending applications covering composition, formulation, and use patents.

Nu-3 belongs to Lakewood-Amedex's Bisphosphocin class of antimicrobials, which the company describes as having a mechanism designed to eliminate bacteria including resistant pathogens and biofilms. The company plans to advance Nu-3 into a Phase 2 clinical trial for mildly infected diabetic foot ulcers.

"These newly issued patents further strengthen and expand our global intellectual property portfolio surrounding the Bisphosphocin platform," said Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Cooper.

The Sarasota, Florida-based clinical-stage biotechnology company focuses on developing antimicrobials to address antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains including MRSA and VRE.
