Rambus launches DDR5 chipset for AI PC memory modules up to 9600 MT/s

Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) announced a DDR5 9600 Client Memory Module Chipset designed for CUDIMM, CQDIMM and CSODIMM modules in AI-enabled personal computers. The chipset supports memory module operation up to 9600 MT/s, according to a company statement.

The chipset includes three components: a Gen2 Client Clock Driver (CKD02) that retimes and distributes clock signals from the processor to DRAM devices, a PMIC5120 power management IC that converts system voltage to DRAM operating levels, and an SPD Hub for module communication and telemetry.

The solution addresses technical challenges that emerge when scaling DDR5 memory beyond 6400 MT/s, including signal degradation, clock jitter and timing instability. The industry is transitioning to clocked memory modules that incorporate on-module clock drivers to condition and redistribute clock signals.

"Agentic workloads are fundamentally more memory-hungry, driving the need for higher memory bandwidth, greater capacity, and improved efficiency in AI-enabled PCs," said Rami Sethi, SVP and general manager of Memory Interface Chips at Rambus.

The chipset operates in the 8000 to 9600 MT/s range and targets AI PCs, notebooks and workstations. CUDIMM and CQDIMM modules are designed for desktop computers, while CSODIMM modules target laptop applications.

Jeff Janukowicz, research vice president at IDC, noted that the industry is transitioning to clocked memory architectures to address signal integrity and timing challenges at higher data rates.

The announcement extends Rambus' memory module chipset offerings from server platforms to client systems. The company provides chips and silicon IP for data center and AI infrastructure applications.
