Rocket Lab completes acquisition of Motiv Space Systems
Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ: RKLB) completed its acquisition of Motiv Space Systems, a California-based space robotics company, the launch services provider announced May 26.
Motiv, now rebranded as Rocket Lab Robotics, specializes in space robotics, motion control systems, and precision mechanisms for spacecraft. The company has contributed to NASA's Mars Perseverance rover mission and CADRE lunar rovers.
The acquisition brings Motiv's 50-person team and Pasadena manufacturing facilities into Rocket Lab's operations. Motiv develops robotic arms, actuators, drive electronics, solar array drive assemblies, antenna and propulsion gimbals, filter wheels, and focus mechanisms.
"With Motiv now part of the Rocket Lab team, we have everything needed to lead the next era of Mars exploration and support the most demanding space infrastructure of tomorrow," said Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck.
The deal positions Rocket Lab to offer integrated solutions for Mars missions, including launch services, spacecraft, software, and robotics capabilities. The company stated the acquisition supports potential commercial Mars Sample Return missions and NASA's Mars Telecommunications Network programs.
Motiv's capabilities also address emerging markets in orbital data centers and satellite constellations, which require high-power solar array systems. Rocket Lab already supplies solar cell and array technology to civil, national security, and commercial space markets.
"Motiv was built around the idea that advanced robotics and motion control systems would become increasingly important to the future of space exploration and space infrastructure," said Chris Thayer, CEO of Motiv Space Systems.
The acquisition adds to Rocket Lab's manufacturing and development facilities across California, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, New Mexico, Arizona, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand.
