American Airlines to install Starlink Wi-Fi on over 500 aircraft

May 26, 2026 11:03 AM

Investing.com -- American Airlines announced Tuesday it will install Starlink Wi-Fi on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft starting in the first quarter of 2027.

The carrier said Starlink uses a low Earth orbit satellite constellation to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting inflight streaming, online gaming and collaborative meeting tools. The system's Aero Terminal can support up to 1 gigabit per second per antenna.

American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the airline is seeking world-class partners to deliver what customers need. She said Starlink will enable seamless streaming, browsing and real-time communication capabilities across the airline's domestic and short-haul international routes.

Garboden said passengers will not need to download documents ahead of flights or worry about lag time. She added that Starlink's high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable for loading pages, joining real-time collaboration tools and staying connected throughout flights.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, said the service will deliver fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew. He said Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate.

American plans to update its Wi-Fi offering on its fleet of more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries.
