SunPower Inc. (NASDAQ: SPWR) announced that its subsidiary Cobalt Power Systems completed construction of solar photovoltaic systems totaling 1.2 megawatts at Santa Clara University in California.

The installation consists of three solar systems across the university campus: an integrated solar structure on the North Parking Garage, elevated solar carports at the Levey Parking Lot, and a rooftop array at the Athletic Excellence Center. The systems are designed to generate over 2.1 million kilowatt-hours annually.

According to the company's press release, the project is expected to provide Santa Clara University with energy savings of approximately $350,000 per year, with total projected savings of $8.8 million over the 25-year warranty period. The payback period is estimated at less than six years before depreciation benefits.

"We are honored to have provided the engineering and construction services for this multi-site solar deployment," said John Paul Bergh, president of Cobalt Power Systems. The systems are designed to be ADA compliant and engineered to support future electric vehicle charging stations and additional renewable energy expansion.

T.J. Rodgers, CEO of SunPower, stated that the Silicon Valley presence through the Cobalt Power Systems acquisition aligns with the company's strategy for commercial and multi-family solar projects. Santa Clara University houses 9,700 students on a 106-acre campus.

The project required adherence to higher engineering and design standards due to its proximity to San Jose Mineta International Airport, according to the company.
