BD launches Elyra thulium fiber laser system for kidney stone treatment
BD (NYSE: BDX) announced the introduction of the Elyra Thulium Fiber Laser System, a laser platform for urologic stone management and soft tissue procedures. The system is now available in the United States in two configurations: Elyra and Elyra Plus.
The system uses thulium fiber laser technology and features an air-cooled design that operates more quietly and has a smaller footprint compared to traditional laser systems. The platform includes an intuitive user interface, quick startup capabilities, customizable presets, and an optional wireless footswitch available only with the Elyra Plus model.
"Elyra demonstrates how BD innovates with speed and purpose, introducing technology that helps clinicians deliver high‑quality care more efficiently," said Mike Cusack, worldwide president of Urology and Critical Care at BD.
BD completed initial clinical cases using the Elyra Plus system at a medical center, where urologists and laser technicians provided feedback on the system's interface and safety features. The company developed the platform internally to enable faster development of future technology generations.
The Elyra system expands BD's urologic stone management portfolio, which includes solutions for access, dilation, visualization, fragmentation, removal and drainage procedures. BD is a medical technology company with more than 60,000 employees operating globally.
