BigBear.ai deploys AI cargo security platform in Panama
BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI) announced that Panama Transshipment Group has signed a commercial agreement to deploy an AI-powered cargo security management solution in Panama. The defense technology company developed the International Shipping Compliance application with partner Narval.
The platform uses biometric verification to link drivers and transport vehicles to containers and security seals, creating an auditable chain-of-custody record from origin to destination. The system aggregates real-time fleet and driver data to help logistics operators detect anomalies and monitor cargo flows.
Panama Transshipment Group, the country's largest logistics operator, is already using the technology to increase supply chain transparency. The deployment marks the first commercial use of the application, which launched in August 2025.
Troy Miller, former acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner who joined BigBear.ai as Senior Vice President of Department of Homeland Security Solutions, said criminal organizations exploit legitimate global commerce systems including ports, free trade zones, and containerized cargo systems.
The platform complies with BASC and C-TPAT international security standards and delivers verified chain-of-custody data to customs agencies. Panama's port system handles approximately 10 million TEUs annually, with nearly 90% tied to transshipment activity.
According to The Panama Canal Authority, Panamanian authorities seized more than 120 metric tons of cocaine tied to containerized cargo moving through canal-adjacent facilities in 2023. The Panama Canal facilitates approximately 5-6% of global maritime trade.
BigBear.ai CEO Kevin McAleenan said the launch in Panama aims to establish a foundation for broader regional adoption. The company specializes in AI solutions for national security and trade customers.
