BitGo adds Lightning Network support to crypto services platform
BitGo Holdings (NYSE: BTGO) announced it has integrated Lightning Network support into its Crypto-as-a-Service platform, enabling businesses to embed bitcoin payment functionality into their products.
The new capability combines Lightning Network payment processing with BitGo's regulated digital asset infrastructure, including custody services and API-driven wallet functionality. BitGo will provide the service through its federally chartered digital asset trust bank, BitGo Bank & Trust, which operates under supervision from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
The company has partnered with Voltage to offer automated node and liquidity management services designed to reduce operational complexity for businesses deploying Lightning infrastructure.
"By adding Lightning Network support to BitGo's Crypto-as-a-Service, we are giving enterprises a path to deliver fast, low-cost bitcoin payments with the regulatory, security, and operational foundation they expect from BitGo," said Mike Belshe, CEO and Co-founder of BitGo.
The Lightning Network operates as a Layer 2 protocol on bitcoin that processes transactions through off-chain payment channels before settling on the main blockchain. This architecture enables faster transaction speeds and lower costs compared to standard bitcoin transactions.
BitGo's platform targets financial technology companies, exchanges, payment platforms, and consumer applications seeking to implement bitcoin payment capabilities including deposits, withdrawals, merchant settlements, and micropayments.
The service includes coverage across 50 states and provides custody, wallet infrastructure, trading workflows, and settlement capabilities through an API framework, according to the company's statement.
