Plug Power to supply electrolyzers for 30 MW UK green hydrogen project

May 20, 2026 7:01 AM

Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) announced that the 30-megawatt Barrow Green Hydrogen project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, has reached final investment decision, with Plug supplying electrolyzers for the facility.

The project is being developed by Green Hydrogen Energy Company, a joint venture between Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power established in 2023. The facility will supply approximately 100 gigawatt-hours of green hydrogen annually to Kimberly-Clark's manufacturing plant in the town, where the company produces Andrex and Kleenex products.

Under the agreement, Plug will provide 30 MW of its GenEco Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzers, configured as six 5 MW units. The electrolyzers will use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen through a long-term power purchase agreement with SEFE, an international energy company.

The project is expected to reduce Kimberly-Clark's natural gas consumption by up to 50% and decrease CO2 emissions by 18,300 tonnes. The Barrow project is part of a larger 55 MW award to Plug for three UK green hydrogen projects, including Trafford and Langage facilities, which continue progressing toward their respective final investment decisions.

All three projects are supported under the UK Government's Hydrogen Business Model through Hydrogen Allocation Round 1. The Barrow facility represents the first of the three projects to move into execution phase.

"With Barrow now having reached FID, we are moving our largest UK project from award into execution," said Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Executive Officer of Plug Power.

Plug operates what it describes as the largest electrolytic liquid hydrogen plant in the United States and has additional facilities in Tennessee and Louisiana. The company reports a global opportunity pipeline exceeding $2 billion and has deployed over 72,000 fuel cell systems and 275 fueling stations.
