Thales partners with Google Cloud for sovereign cloud offering in Germany
Thales (Euronext Paris: HO) announced a partnership with Google Cloud to establish a sovereign cloud solution in Germany. The companies plan to launch the offering through a new German entity that Thales will fully own and control, with operations managed by local German personnel.
The sovereign cloud offering aims to meet German regulatory requirements including C5 and the new C3A framework criteria. The solution is currently available in preview mode and targets general availability by the end of 2026.
The new German entity will operate independently from Google Cloud, providing what the companies describe as complete operational separation. This structure is designed to ensure that no third party, including non-European entities, can access data stored or processed within the infrastructure.
The partnership builds on Thales' existing S3NS subsidiary in France, which operates the PREMI3NS sovereign cloud offering. The German region will create what the companies call a pan-European, geo-redundant sovereign cloud offering that provides cross-border disaster recovery capabilities.
"Germany represents a critical market for sovereign technologies, and this partnership is a direct response to private and public sector German organizations wanting access to Google Cloud's technology under full German control," said Christoph Ruffner, CEO and Country Director of Thales in Germany.
The offering targets German public sector organizations and highly regulated industries seeking cloud capabilities while maintaining data sovereignty. Thales operates nine sites in Germany with 2,300 employees and has maintained a presence in the country since 1880.
According to the announcement, S3NS achieved SecNumCloud 3.2 qualification for its PREMI3NS offering in 2025. The new German region aims to achieve both SecNumCloud and C5-C3A certifications across both regions.
