Volvo to integrate Google Gemini AI in EX60 for real-time driving

May 19, 2026 2:05 PM

Investing.com -- Volvo Cars announced Tuesday a partnership with Google to integrate Google Gemini artificial intelligence technology into its vehicles, starting with the EX60 model. The collaboration aims to create contextually aware driving experiences using AI and vehicle camera integration.

The companies will demonstrate the Google Gemini vehicle camera integration at the Google I/O conference on May 19-20. The technology will allow Gemini to see and understand the car's surroundings in real time with driver permission.

The system will enable drivers to recall road signs, interpret lane markings, and obtain information about landmarks or restaurants. One application involves reading and interpreting parking signs in real time to help drivers understand restrictions, time limits, permit requirements, and charging rules.

"The EX60 provides an ideal platform to explore the future of contextually aware driving experiences," said Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars. "Working closely with Google as a lead device partner allows us to help bring the latest advances in AI into the automotive environment faster and more collaboratively than ever before."

The integration uses the Gemini model's multi-modal understanding, the EX60's neural processing engine, and software-defined architecture.

Volvo Cars will also introduce Immersive Navigation from Google Maps into its vehicles. The feature offers a 3D view with redesigned buildings, tunnels, and overpasses to help drivers understand complex roads and turns. Voice guidance will reference real-world landmarks alongside distance and timing information.

"We're excited to partner with Volvo Cars on helping build the next generation of driving experiences for the real world," said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google.

Immersive Navigation from Google Maps will be available in the Volvo EX60, EX90, and ES90 models.
