OpenAI adds Google's SynthID watermarking to AI-generated images

Investing.com -- OpenAI announced on Tuesday it is implementing new measures to help users identify content created with its artificial intelligence tools, including the addition of Google's SynthID watermarking technology to AI-generated images.

The company said it has become a Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity Conforming Generator Product, giving platforms a method to read and preserve information attached to content created through OpenAI's systems. The C2PA uses metadata and cryptographic signatures to help information about media travel with the content.

OpenAI is incorporating Google DeepMind's SynthID watermarking for images generated through ChatGPT, Codex, or the OpenAI API. The invisible watermarking layer is designed to complement C2PA metadata-based approaches and remain intact through transformations like screenshots and file format changes.

The company is previewing a public verification tool that allows users to check if an uploaded image was generated using ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, or Codex by detecting provenance signals including Content Credentials and SynthID. The tool checks for both watermarks and metadata to determine if content originated from OpenAI.

OpenAI has been adding Content Credentials to images generated by DALLĀ·E 3 since 2024, later expanding the practice to ImageGen and Sora. The company joined the C2PA Steering Committee, the cross-industry group behind the open technical standard for content provenance.

The verification tool at launch is limited to content generated by OpenAI. The company said it plans to support cross-industry verification efforts across platforms in the coming months and expects to support additional content types over time.
