Quantum Cyber files patent for autonomous naval mine countermeasure system
Quantum Cyber N.V. (NASDAQ: QUCY) filed a provisional patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an Autonomous Distributed Naval Mine Countermeasure System. The filing, numbered 64/066-872, establishes a priority date for technology designed to detect and neutralize underwater naval mines using unmanned aerial vehicle-deployed platforms.
The system deploys semi-submerged survey pods from unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct multibeam sonar scanning, magnetometer sensing, and hydrophone acoustic analysis. According to the company, the technology achieves mine identification probability exceeding 85 percent in testing. Upon target confirmation, the system deploys neutralization pods that generate acoustic signatures, magnetic field waveforms, and optional pressure charges to trigger mine influence fuzes.
The patent filing addresses current operational needs in the Strait of Hormuz, where U.S. Central Command has confirmed Iran has placed naval mines following the 2026 Iran conflict. The Pentagon issued navigational warnings describing the strait as hazardous due to mines and directed commercial vessels to use alternate routing through Omani waters.
"Iran mining the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most significant maritime security crises in decades, and the U.S. Navy has publicly acknowledged a capability gap in autonomous mine countermeasures in the theater," said Peter O'Rourke, board member at Quantum Cyber.
The Strait of Hormuz carries approximately 20 percent of global oil supply and one-third of global liquefied natural gas trade. The Trump administration has requested approximately $55 billion for drone and autonomous warfare programs in the fiscal 2027 defense budget.
Quantum Cyber's patent portfolio includes applications for autonomous naval mine countermeasures and EMP-shielding composite filament for UAV electronics protection. The company develops autonomous defense technologies including drone warfare platforms, counter-UAS systems, and quantum antenna communications technology.
