Western Digital introduces post-quantum cryptography in hard drives

Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ: WDC) announced it has integrated post-quantum cryptography into its Ultrastar UltraSMR hard disk drives, marking what the company describes as the first implementation of quantum-resistant algorithms in production storage hardware.

The new Ultrastar DC HC6100 UltraSMR drives are currently undergoing customer qualification with multiple hyperscale clients. The drives implement ML-DSA-87 algorithm following NIST FIPS 204 standards for code signing, combined with RSA-3072 in a dual-signing approach.

The post-quantum cryptography implementation focuses on securing device-level trust chains, including firmware integrity and key management, rather than data-at-rest encryption. Western Digital has deployed quantum-capable public key infrastructure and hardware security module workflows to support the technology.

"Quantum computing represents one of the most significant technology transitions of our time, and it is advancing faster than many organizations anticipate," said Dr. Xiaodong Che, Chief Technology Officer at Western Digital. "Integrating post-quantum cryptography into our Ultrastar enterprise-class drives is part of our commitment to helping customers stay ahead of threats."

The technology addresses concerns about "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks, where adversaries collect encrypted data with the intention of decrypting it once quantum computing capabilities advance. Enterprise storage infrastructure typically remains in service for five years or longer, potentially overlapping with the emergence of quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption methods.

Western Digital stated it expects to expand post-quantum cryptography capabilities across additional enterprise hard drive product lines over time. The implementation includes operational continuity features such as dual-signing and rollback safeguards designed to support deployment without disrupting current operations.
