Fujitsu and IBM Japan formalize healthcare collaboration in Japan
Fujitsu Limited and IBM Japan announced the formalization of a healthcare sector collaboration on May 15, building on initial considerations announced in September 2025. The partnership focuses on developing a sovereign cloud platform for medical use and joint utilization of medical AI solutions.
The companies will operate their electronic health record solutions on Fujitsu's sovereign cloud platform to enable data integration across multiple medical institutions in Japan. The collaboration aims to address structural challenges in Japan's healthcare system while ensuring data sovereignty through domestic technology control.
Japan's healthcare system faces increasing demand due to an aging population, with medical expenses exceeding 48 trillion yen annually. The system encounters challenges including social security funding sustainability, declining medical personnel, and financial difficulties for medical institutions.
The partnership includes two primary initiatives. First, Fujitsu and IBM Japan will develop a sovereign cloud platform where Fujitsu's cloud environment serves as a foundation for both companies' electronic health record solutions. Second, the companies will leverage AI solutions to enhance medical operations through secure data integration from multiple institutions with patient and institutional consent.
Specific AI applications include support for creating medical documents such as clinical and nursing reports, and streamlining DPC coding for medical fee claims. The companies are exploring use cases to accelerate healthcare and drug discovery collaboration, including identifying suitable clinical trial patients and improving clinical research efficiency.
Fujitsu and IBM Japan plan to collaborate with Japanese medical institutions, including university hospitals and national centers, to validate healthcare data utilization and AI use cases. The companies will consider integration with multiple medical information systems and expansion of data and AI utilization use cases.
Fujitsu reported consolidated revenues of 3.5 trillion yen for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, according to the company statement.
