Detroit Pistons sign TV deal with Scripps Sports for free broadcasts

May 13, 2026 4:00 PM

The Detroit Pistons announced a new local television media rights agreement with Scripps Sports beginning with the 2026-27 NBA season. The deal returns Pistons games to free, over-the-air television throughout Detroit and Michigan.

Under the agreement, WMYD TV20 Detroit, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP), will become the official local broadcast home of the Detroit Pistons. TV20 Detroit will produce and air all locally available preseason and regular season games. Fans will be able to watch games for free via over-the-air television and through participating cable and satellite providers.

The agreement marks the Pistons' return to primarily local broadcast television for the first time since 2005 and eliminates the need for a paid television subscription to watch locally televised games. Terms of the partnership were not disclosed per team policy.

"This move is for our fans. They have been huge all season and throughout this playoff run," said Pistons Owner Tom Gores. "It's a new era of Pistons basketball and we want to make sure that more people in Detroit and throughout Michigan can be part of the journey."

Scripps will pair WXYZ's news capabilities with TV20 Detroit's broadcast platform to deliver Pistons coverage. The partnership includes comprehensive game-day coverage with pregame, in-game and postgame programming, plus a weekly half-hour Pistons show and original team-focused content.

Scripps Sports plans to engage its stations across Michigan to create broader network exposure for Detroit Pistons basketball throughout the state. The Pistons and Scripps Sports also plan to collaborate on a direct-to-consumer streaming application, with details to be announced later.
