Spotify extends managed accounts to free users in select markets
Spotify Technology SA (NYSE: SPOT) announced it will expand managed accounts for users under 13 to its free, ad-supported tier in six countries. The feature, previously available only to Premium Family subscribers, launches in Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, and Sweden.
The managed accounts allow parents and guardians to create music-only profiles for young listeners while maintaining control over content. Parents can filter explicit material, manage specific artist playback, and disable video content and visual features by default.
Young users with managed accounts can create playlists, receive music recommendations, and access features like daylist and personalized year-end Wrapped summaries. The accounts exclude interactive features such as Messages and Jam sessions.
Spotify introduced managed accounts for Premium Family users nearly two years ago in select markets. The company cited data showing 94% of users discover new music through the platform, with 54% sharing their listening habits with children.
Free-tier managed accounts will include Spotify advertisements, while Premium Family subscribers can add young listeners without ads. Parents can establish managed accounts through the Settings and privacy section of the mobile app and adjust controls at any time.
The streaming service stated that 93% of users express interest in features that provide more control over their listening experience. Spotify recently introduced video controls allowing users to toggle music videos, podcast videos, and visual content on or off for themselves and Family Plan members.
