Chegg expands into AI model training services with proprietary data

May 13, 2026 9:01 AM

Chegg Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) announced it will offer AI model training services to organizations, utilizing its proprietary academic data and network of subject matter experts accumulated over a decade of operations.

The San Francisco-based learning company said it will provide training data and expert evaluation services for AI systems, particularly focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The company plans to license its library of academic content to AI laboratories for training models in reasoning and problem-solving capabilities.

"At Chegg, we're excited to expand our strategic focus to help train the next generation of AI models," said Dan Rosensweig, Chief Executive Officer. "With our experience building highly accurate, structured learning systems – combined with millions of complex, step-by-step reasoning solutions and our rigorously calibrated expert network - we're uniquely positioned to help AI models develop true reasoning and problem-solving capabilities."

Chegg stated that its approach differs from other talent marketplaces by offering operational systems that assess and align expert contributions rather than simply connecting AI labs with subject matter experts. The company said this addresses challenges in managing consistent, high-quality human input for AI development.

Erik Manuevo, General Manager of AI Services at Chegg, cited a Gartner prediction that organizations will abandon 60% of AI projects through 2026 due to lack of AI-ready data. The company said it has gained early customer validation from technology organizations, including members of what it described as the "Magnificent Seven."

The announcement represents Chegg's expansion beyond its traditional student learning platform into the business-to-business AI services market. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CHGG.
