Investing.com -- Tesla has received authorization to test its supervised self-driving software on one vehicle in Belgium's Flanders region, a spokesperson for regional minister Annick De Ridder said on Wednesday.

The U.S. automaker can begin testing as soon as it obtains a license plate and insurance, which could happen on Wednesday or Friday, the spokesperson said. Thursday is a holiday in Belgium.

The authorization from Flanders will be valid across all Belgian territory. Last week, De Ridder said the region was examining whether it could quickly authorize the technology following the Dutch regulator's provisional approval of the software on Dutch roads last month. The Netherlands became the first country in the European Union to allow the software, which can control a car but requires drivers to remain attentive.

The vehicle will be tested over approximately 5,000 kilometers to evaluate any differences with Dutch road infrastructure and traffic rules, De Ridder said in a post on X. If the results are positive, work can quickly be done on a provisional European type approval, she added.
