Global Payments Inc. (NYSE: GPN) announced the launch of its AI-first Genius handheld point-of-sale device designed for restaurant and retail environments. The company will preview the device at the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago from May 16-19.

The handheld device features AI-powered voice ordering technology that allows servers to conduct conversations with customers while the system processes orders in the background. The device includes neural processing capability for local AI inference, multiple built-in microphones, 5G connectivity, and EMV and NFC payment acceptance.

According to the press release, the device measures among the thinnest handheld POS devices in its category and fits in server apron pockets. It supports various use cases including table service, food trucks, and pop-up stores.

"We designed a next-generation handheld, purpose built with advanced hardware and intelligent software to power the next evolution of AI-driven commerce for restaurants," said David Rumph, president of SMB for Global Payments.

The company also introduced new Genius kiosk configurations for self-service operations. The kiosks share the same platform architecture as other Genius devices and offer multiple mounting options and display sizes, including 21.5-inch and 10-inch configurations.

Global Payments launched a national advertising campaign for Genius featuring chef Roy Choi. The Genius platform marks its one-year anniversary since launch, according to the company statement.

Global Payments processes payments across more than 175 countries and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
