Nebius begins construction on AI facility in Independence, Missouri
Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS) broke ground on its AI data center campus in Independence, Missouri, marking the company's first gigawatt-scale digital infrastructure project in the United States.
The multi-building facility will be constructed on approximately 400 acres in eastern Independence. The project is expected to create about 1,200 construction jobs and 130 permanent positions when fully operational, according to a company statement.
The AI cloud company projects the facility will generate $650 million in tax payments to local school districts and taxing jurisdictions over 20 years. Nebius already operates in the Kansas City area.
"Projects like this are built for the long term, and we are committed to developing this facility in a way that directly benefits Independence," said Nebius Board Chairman John Boynton.
Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe stated the investment strengthens the state's position in digital infrastructure while creating jobs and supporting local schools and businesses.
Construction of the first phase is underway. The company said it has implemented design measures to minimize local impact, including reducing water use and containing noise and light.
Nebius has established a community benefits plan focused on education and local investment. The company recently donated funds to eliminate school meal debt at Independence and Fort Osage School Districts and entered an agreement with Metropolitan Community College for AI literacy and workforce development programs.
The Independence School District expects to receive more than $463 million over 20 years from the project, according to Deputy Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Grant.
Nebius operates as an AI cloud platform company, serving startups and enterprises building AI products and services. The Amsterdam-headquartered company is listed on Nasdaq.
