WHO expects additional cases of hantavirus, but no wider outbreak seen

May 12, 2026 12:06 PM

Investing.com - The World Health Organization said Tuesday that 11 cases of hantavirus, including three deaths, have been reported among passengers and crew on a cruise ship, but the agency sees no indication of a broader outbreak.

Nine of the 11 cases are confirmed and two are probable, all among people aboard the vessel, WHO said in an update posted on social media platform X. The organization expects additional cases given the virus's incubation period and transmission dynamics on ships.

The cases occurred on the Dutch expedition ship MV Hondius, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, for an Antarctic and Atlantic voyage carrying approximately 150 people from multiple countries.

Passengers and crew are being monitored in their home countries, where WHO recommends a 42-day quarantine at home or in a facility starting from the day of departure from the ship.

WHO said the risk to the general public remains low, with no evidence of wider community transmission. Passengers and crew have been sent home or to medical facilities.
