Markel Canada partners with hyperexponential for AI underwriting platform
Markel International, a division of Markel Insurance within Markel Group Inc. (NYSE: MKL), announced a partnership with hyperexponential to modernize rating and underwriting workflows across its Canadian operations.
The collaboration includes the launch of an Environmental rating capability on hyperexponential's platform, designed to create a more streamlined digital experience for underwriters. The system consolidates data, pricing and context into a single workflow, according to the company's press release.
The hyperexponential platform serves as a centralized rating layer intended to support more complex products and package policies. Markel Canada aims to reduce friction in decision-making processes while enabling underwriters to access necessary information without multiple handoffs.
"Our underwriters need tools that support good judgement, not slow it down," said Cliff Laidlaw, Senior Vice President of Underwriting at Markel Canada. "By pulling data directly into the rating workflow, we're cutting friction from everyday decisions and letting our teams focus on what matters most."
The architecture is designed to accommodate future AI-enabled capabilities as they develop. Maureen Tomlinson, Senior Vice President of Operations at Markel Canada and Head of AI at Markel International, stated the initiative represents an investment in a more sophisticated underwriting environment beyond replacing existing spreadsheet-based systems.
Hyperexponential provides pricing and underwriting platforms for commercial property and casualty insurance markets. The company reports serving carriers that process over $60 billion in gross written premiums annually and has backing from Andreessen Horowitz and Battery Ventures.
Richard Gunn, President at hyperexponential, noted that Markel's approach involves building infrastructure for future underwriting capabilities rather than modifying existing systems.
