May 12, 2026 8:01 AM

Viking (NYSE: VIK) launched its first fully electric motor coach for guest transportation in Vienna, according to a company press release. The cruise line stated it is the first river cruise operator to use a 100% electric motor coach in Europe.

The 49-passenger electric coach is now operating in Vienna as part of Viking's shore excursion program. The company plans to deploy additional electric coaches across Europe in the coming years.

"Electric motor coaches are quieter and offer a zero-emission solution, and we look forward to operating them in many more Viking destinations in the coming months and years," said Torstein Hagen, chairman and CEO of Viking.

The electric motor coach addition builds on Viking's environmental initiatives. In 2009, the company introduced hybrid diesel-electric engines to river cruising. Viking's Longships feature diesel-electric engines, onboard solar panels, and a patented square bow design.

Viking also announced plans for the Viking Libra, which the company describes as the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, scheduled for delivery in fall 2026.

The Los Angeles-based company operates more than 100 ships across rivers, oceans and all seven continents. Viking serves travelers on 21 rivers and five oceans through its experiential travel programs focused on science, history, culture and cuisine.
