Sonilo partners with Shutterstock for licensed AI music training

May 11, 2026 5:19 PM

Sonilo announced a partnership with Shutterstock Inc. (NYSE: SSTK) to license the company's music catalog for AI model training. The agreement marks Shutterstock's first partnership with a video-to-music AI platform.

The San Francisco-based startup, backed by B Capital venture firm, operates what it describes as a video-to-music AI platform that generates original soundtracks by analyzing video footage rather than text prompts. The company's Sonilo v1.0 model processes video content to create music that matches the pacing and structure of the footage.

"Music has always been the last unsolved layer of video creation, and video has always carried its own soundtrack," said Shawn Song, CEO of Sonilo. "We built Sonilo to hear it and compose from it, without a single text prompt."

Jessica April, Vice President of Data Licensing & AI Services at Shutterstock, stated that the partnership reflects demand for responsibly sourced training data. "Sonilo's approach reflects the growing demand for responsibly sourced training data and commercially safe AI workflows," April said.

The partnership comes as infringement cases against AI companies increased by more than 130% year over year by 2025, according to the press release. Sonilo's business model involves securing licensing agreements before training its AI models, rather than using copyrighted content without authorization.

Sonilo recently launched as a native node within ComfyUI, an open-source AI workflow tool used by over four million creators. The platform offers Free, Pro, and Premium tiers and provides API access for integration into video tools and creator platforms.

The company plans additional platform integrations throughout the remainder of the year. Shutterstock provides one of the world's largest collections of licensed creative content and offers data licensing services for AI model training.
