Moleculin Biotech receives Hong Kong patent for Annamycin reconstitution method
Moleculin Biotech Inc. (NASDAQ: MBRX) announced it received a Hong Kong patent for its method of reconstituting liposomal Annamycin, extending protection through June 25, 2040.
The patent, numbered 40073244 and titled "Method of Reconstituting Liposomal Annamycin," is jointly owned with The University of Texas System. The company said this adds to its global intellectual property portfolio for Annamycin across multiple countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Europe, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, and Taiwan.
Annamycin represents Moleculin's lead product candidate, designed as an anthracycline that aims to avoid cardiotoxicity and multidrug resistance while improving tissue distribution compared to currently prescribed anthracyclines. The drug candidate uses a multilamellar lipid-based delivery system.
"This patent issuance is a meaningful step forward in fortifying the global intellectual property foundation for Annamycin," said Walter Klemp, President and Chief Executive Officer of Moleculin. "This level of patent protection is made all the more important given the expected timing of our first Phase 3 clinical data release later this quarter."
The company is currently conducting the MIRACLE Trial, a Phase 3 study evaluating Annamycin in combination with cytarabine for treating relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia. Moleculin is also developing WP1066 for brain tumors and other cancers, along with WP1122 for viral infections and certain cancer indications.
The information is based on a company press release statement.
