Ocean Power Technologies demonstrates autonomous drone charging system

May 7, 2026 8:16 AM

Ocean Power Technologies Inc. (NYSE American: OPTT) announced it has successfully demonstrated autonomous docking, charging, and redeployment of its WAM-V autonomous surface vehicle. The system enables the maritime drone to approach a dock, secure itself, recharge, and return to operation without human intervention.

The company plans to integrate this capability with its PowerBuoy platform to create offshore charging points that support continuous operations at sea. These systems are intended to eventually form a distributed marine charging network for maritime drones and electric boats.

"Extending time on station while reducing the need for manned support is critical to scaling offshore autonomy," said Philipp Stratmann, Chief Executive Officer of Ocean Power Technologies. "Docking and charging is an integral step forward in making these systems practical and cost-effective for customers."

Ocean Power Technologies is also developing upgrades to its WAM-V platform through its next generation system architecture program. The upgrades focus on improving system compatibility, simplifying upgrades, enabling increased endurance, and supporting a broader range of customer payloads.

The Monroe Township, New Jersey-based company provides maritime solutions and services for defense and security, oil and gas, science and research, and offshore wind markets. Its products include PowerBuoy platforms for remote maritime applications and WAM-V autonomous surface vessels.

The information is based on a company press release.
