QIAGEN plans automated tuberculosis testing workflow for late 2027

May 7, 2026 6:01 AM

QIAGEN N.V. (NYSE: QGEN) announced plans to launch a fully automated sample-to-insight workflow and an AI-enabled risk stratification tool for tuberculosis testing, both targeted for late 2027.

The automated workflow will integrate QIAGEN's QuantiFERON test with Diasorin LIAISON systems and automation technology from new partner Inpeco. The system is designed to automate the complete latent TB testing process without routine manual operator intervention, from tube handling and incubation to detection.

QIAGEN is separately developing an AI-enabled tool to analyze quantitative QuantiFERON results and help stratify patients at higher risk of TB progression. The tool uses a dataset of approximately 13 million de-identified patient records collected over 10 years.

The company estimates the global latent TB testing market at approximately 75 million tests annually, growing 4% to 5% per year. About 40% of this market has converted from traditional skin tests to blood-based interferon-gamma release assay testing.

Through its partnership with Switzerland-based Inpeco, QIAGEN will develop a dedicated QuantiFERON aliquoting system and an intelligent incubation system integrated into laboratory automation tracks.

The announcement comes as QIAGEN and Diasorin continue rollout of LIAISON QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus II, launched in Europe in November 2025 and in the U.S. in February 2026. The new chemistry offers faster processing and turnaround times compared to previous versions.

"By enabling full automation of the QuantiFERON IGRA workflow, laboratories can decouple volume growth from staffing requirements, reduce hands-on time by up to 80% and transition to continuous, real-time processing," the company stated in its announcement.

QIAGEN's QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus captures both CD4 and CD8 T-cell responses to TB-specific antigens, providing what the company describes as a foundation for AI-enabled analysis of TB progression risk.
