AirAsia X has ordered 150 Airbus A220 aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, with deliveries starting in 2028, according to a company statement. The order includes a 12-year EngineWise Comprehensive service agreement for engine maintenance.

Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), will provide the engines and maintenance services for the aircraft order. The A220 fleet will have a range of up to seven hours and is designed to serve medium-haul routes.

"This order reflects the airline's confidence in the GTF engine and its unmatched fuel efficiency and smaller noise footprint," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia X, stated that the aircraft will enable the airline to "build the biggest and densest network" and open up new route possibilities with right-sized capacity.

The GTF engine fleet has accumulated 50 million flying hours globally and carried 1.9 billion passengers since entering service. More than 2,700 GTF-powered aircraft are operated by over 90 customers worldwide. Pratt & Whitney has received over 13,000 GTF engine orders and commitments to date.

AirAsia operates in five ASEAN countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia. The airline currently operates more than 250 aircraft and has served over 900 million passengers across more than 150 destinations since its founding in 2001.

RTX reported 2025 sales of more than $88 billion and employs over 180,000 people globally. The company is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.
