Vishay introduces compact proximity sensor with 600mm detection range

May 6, 2026 11:00 AM

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced the release of the VCNL36758 proximity sensor, designed in a 5.0 mm x 2.0 mm x 1.5 mm surface-mount package. The device combines an infrared emitter, photodiode, amplifiers, and 12-bit analog-to-digital converter in a single unit.

The sensor provides proximity detection up to 600 mm and targets applications in smart home devices, industrial equipment, and office systems. According to the company, the new device offers a 65% volume reduction compared to previous-generation solutions while maintaining longer detection distances than typical short-range sensors.

The VCNL36758 operates on 1.7 to 3.6 volts and features an LED pulse current of 240 mA. The device includes programmable interrupt functions and active force mode capabilities designed to reduce power consumption. The sensor operates across a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.

Applications for the device include presence detection for display activation in printers and tablets, collision avoidance in robotics, proximity sensing for lighting control in buildings, and parking space detection systems. The sensor incorporates background light cancellation technology and crosstalk elimination features.

The device uses a 940 nm emitter wavelength and includes intelligent cancellation technology. The sensor is manufactured in a lead-free, RoHS-compliant package and meets halogen-free specifications.

Vishay stated that samples and production quantities are available with 16-week lead times. The announcement was made through a company press release.
