BRIGHT and LanzaTech partner on carbon conversion biotechnology in Europe

May 6, 2026 10:21 AM

BRIGHT, the biotechnology research institute at Denmark's Technical University, and LanzaTech Global Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA) have entered a multi-year partnership to develop technologies that convert carbon emissions into commercial products.

The agreement runs until April 2028 and includes the design and installation of a C1 biofoundry at the Technical University of Denmark. The facility will use gas fermentation technology where microbes transform carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane into fuels, chemicals and materials.

"DTU has a history of driving innovation from the lab to commercial deployment. Our new partnership with LanzaTech emphasizes our commitment to accelerate bio-solutions innovation for the benefit of Denmark, Europe and beyond," said Christine Nellemann, DTU provost.

Under the agreement, a LanzaTech team will develop methods and workflows for BRIGHT's research missions, provide a non-exclusive license to relevant intellectual property for tools and biofoundry workflows, and design the customized facility.

LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren said the partnership represents a milestone in the company's transformation. "By creating a dedicated team that consolidates our biotechnology know-how, we can focus the broader team on our commitment to delivering commercial sustainable aviation fuel and biorefining projects," she stated.

The biofoundry will feature automation and robotics designed for gas-handling and high-throughput strain development of specialized microbes. LanzaTech has developed synthetic biology capabilities for carbon-fixing organisms over more than 15 years.

BRIGHT director Luuk van der Wielen said the partnership brings capabilities to Denmark and accelerates efforts to convert carbon emissions into products. The facility aims to create a platform for researchers and innovation activities across Europe in carbon-to-value biotechnology.
