White House explores executive order to vet AI models before release

Investing.com -- The White House is examining an executive order to establish a vetting system for new artificial intelligence models, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Wednesday.

The proposed framework would require AI models to undergo testing before public release, similar to Food and Drug Administration drug approval processes, Hassett told Fox Business.

"We have scrambled an all of government effort and all the private sector to coordinate and make sure that before this model is released out into the wild, that it's been tested left and right, to make sure that it doesn't cause any harm to the American businesses or the American government," Hassett said.

The initiative follows Anthropic PBC's disclosure that its Mythos model can identify network vulnerabilities and may present cybersecurity risks. Anthropic has restricted Mythos access to select large technology and financial firms. The Trump administration has sought to provide federal agencies access to Mythos for testing government systems, an effort Hassett confirmed.

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and senior administration officials met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei last month to discuss topics including Mythos.

Hassett said testing requirements under the potential order would "really quite likely" apply to all AI companies. "I think that, that Mythos is the first of them, but it's incumbent on us to build a system," he said.

The scope of any mandatory testing requirements remains unclear. Such measures would represent a departure from President Donald Trump's previous approach emphasizing minimal AI regulation.

On Tuesday, the Commerce Department expanded a voluntary AI testing program. Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Microsoft Corp. and xAI agreed to provide the government access to their models for capability assessment and security improvements. OpenAI and Anthropic already participate in the program, managed by the department's Center for AI Standards and Innovation.
