Terrestrial Energy and Riot Platforms partner on nuclear-powered data centers

May 6, 2026 9:03 AM

Terrestrial Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: IMSR) and Riot Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: RIOT) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop data centers powered by nuclear energy plants.

The collaboration aims to deploy multiple 390 MW Integral Molten Salt Reactor plants representing up to 4 GW of nuclear power capacity. The partnership will evaluate project sites including existing Riot facilities in Texas and Kentucky.

Terrestrial Energy develops small modular nuclear power plants using Generation IV reactor technology. Riot Platforms operates large-scale data centers and bitcoin mining facilities.

The companies plan to customize IMSR plants for integration with Riot-developed data centers designed for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications. The arrangement includes potential use of natural gas as bridge fuel during initial operations.

"This partnership brings together two companies with sector leading capabilities to unlock the tremendous value in IMSR Plant supply to data center operations," said Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy.

Jason Les, CEO of Riot Platforms, stated that partnering with Terrestrial Energy positions their facilities "at the forefront of data center deployment, utilizing clean energy and benefitting both our customers and the communities we operate in."

Terrestrial Energy's IMSR design features non-nuclear energy conversion systems housed separately from regulated nuclear systems. The company uses standard-assay low enriched uranium fuel enriched to less than 5% U235, avoiding supply chain constraints associated with higher-enriched uranium used by other Generation IV reactors.

The companies are evaluating configurations that combine nuclear power supply with data center operations optimized for hyperscale tenants. Riot's data center development team has experience in design, engineering, construction and operations of large-scale facilities.
