Amazon partners with Transaera for heat pump technology expansion

May 5, 2026 10:08 AM

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced a multi-year commercial agreement with Boston-based Transaera to integrate the company's heat pump technology into Amazon's HVAC systems following a successful six-month field trial.

The trial at an Amazon logistics facility demonstrated energy savings compared to traditional systems while maintaining performance in hot and humid conditions, according to independent third-party analysis cited in the press release.

Transaera's technology uses Metal Organic Frameworks to remove moisture before cooling, rather than overcooling air to remove moisture. The company claims this approach provides 40% energy savings compared to conventional packaged direct expansion systems.

"At Amazon, we seek technologies that support our Climate Pledge goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040," said Asad Jafry, Director of Global Energy, Sustainability and AGV at Amazon.

Under the agreement, Transaera will dedicate a portion of its U.S.-based manufacturing output to support Amazon's HVAC deployment needs. The collaboration expands beyond the initial trial to broader integration across Amazon's building network.

Transaera's Dedicated Outdoor Air System has demonstrated more than double the current federal minimum efficiency standard for moisture removal, according to the company. The systems function as heat pumps capable of cooling, heating, and dehumidifying without natural gas reheat.

"HVAC use accounts for over one-third of energy use in commercial buildings," said Sorin Grama, CEO and Co-founder of Transaera.

The Massachusetts-based company was founded by MIT engineers and materials scientists. Transaera is building a U.S.-based supply chain for its HVAC systems as part of the collaboration.
