Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN) announced it received a $21.5 million follow-on production contract to manufacture thermal imaging eyepiece assemblies for a major U.S. defense prime contractor.

The Westborough, Massachusetts-based company will produce custom eyepiece modules that serve as components of detachable, man-portable thermal weapon systems. The assemblies include Kopin's U.S.-manufactured microdisplays, precision optics, drive electronics and ruggedized enclosure housing.

The thermal weapon sight modules are designed to enable military personnel to detect, identify and engage threats in various environmental conditions during day and night operations.

"This award reflects the trust our customers place in our mission-ready vision systems," said Iwan Dodd, senior vice president of business development and strategy. "By manufacturing these thermal weapon-sight modules domestically, we strengthen the defense industrial base and ensure our warfighters have access to equipment that performs in the harshest conditions."

Kopin stated it has delivered over 400,000 mission-critical solutions across multiple generations of defense programs. The company develops and provides display and optical solutions for defense, enterprise, professional and consumer products.

The contract expands Kopin's backlog and represents continued business in the defense sector for the optical systems provider. Information about the contract details comes from a company press release.
