HOYTS and IMAX announce 10 new laser cinema locations in Australia and New Zealand
IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) and HOYTS Cinemas signed an agreement for ten new IMAX with Laser locations across Australia and New Zealand, according to a company statement. The expansion will increase IMAX's presence with HOYTS from four current locations to fourteen theaters in the coming years.
At least three new locations will open before the end of 2026, with additional theaters opening throughout 2027 and 2028. The agreement represents the largest IMAX deal in Australia's history and nearly doubles the company's regional footprint.
"Expanding our IMAX footprint will give more audiences access to one of the most immersive and technologically advanced cinema experiences," said Damian Keogh, HOYTS Group CEO and President.
IMAX has expanded from one location in Australia in 2022 to ten currently operating, with fourteen additional theaters in development including this new agreement. The company reported record box office performance in Australia last year, generating AUD $18.6 million in revenue.
Australia currently ranks ninth globally among IMAX markets in 2026, with three locations including HOYTS Chadstone ranking among the top 30 IMAX theaters worldwide. The market showed strong performance with recent releases, with one title achieving the second-biggest opening weekend for IMAX in Australia.
The new theaters will feature IMAX with Laser technology, which delivers 4K images and enhanced audio through custom projection systems. Giovanni Dolci, IMAX Chief Commercial Officer, noted that Australia represents one of the company's highest-performing markets globally.
HOYTS operates more than 500 screens across Australia and New Zealand and holds over 30% of national admissions in Australia. IMAX operates 1,864 systems across 91 countries as of December 31, 2025.
