Enphase Energy develops solid-state transformer for AI data centers

April 28, 2026 4:05 PM

Enphase Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: ENPH) announced the development of the IQ Solid-State Transformer, a distributed power conversion platform designed for AI data centers, according to a company press release.

The IQ SST system consists of 1.25 MW racks containing 342 intelligent power modules operating in coordinated series and parallel configurations. The platform is designed to achieve 98.5% efficiency and 99.999% availability through built-in redundancy, allowing continued operation with only 90% of power modules functioning.

The system converts medium-voltage AC power, including 35 kV and 15 kV interconnection classes, directly into regulated DC power in a single conversion stage. It supports both 800 VDC and ±400 VDC rack configurations defined by emerging AI data center standards, with sub-millisecond response to dynamic loads.

The platform is designed without internal batteries and aims to reduce or eliminate rack-level battery sidecars and traditional uninterruptible power supply systems in supported configurations. This approach is intended to decrease power infrastructure requirements and increase available floor space for computing equipment.

The power modules use gallium nitride power-switching technology and Enphase's fifth-generation control ASIC, a custom 22-nanometer chip called "Kestrel." The system is derived from Enphase's microinverter platform technology.

Enphase plans to manufacture the IQ SST using its existing automated platform that has produced approximately 87.8 million microinverters. The company expects to build power modules from standard semiconductor components at U.S. manufacturing facilities.

Full system demonstrations are expected late this year, with customer pilots planned for 2027 and volume shipments anticipated in 2028. Enphase estimates the initial annual U.S. addressable opportunity for the platform in AI data centers could exceed 11 GW by 2031.
