Airbus secures Spanish fighter pilot training system contract
Airbus (OTC: EADSY) announced it will lead a Spanish industrial consortium to deliver the Spanish Air and Space Force's new Integrated Combat Training System under a contract awarded in December 2025.
The program will replace Spain's current F-5 aircraft fleet with 30 HÜRJET training aircraft manufactured by Turkish Aerospace. The aircraft will be customized to Spanish specifications and designated as SAETA II, with Spanish industry providing 60% participation in the project.
Airbus will redesign the Fighter and Strike school Training Centre at Talavera la Real Air Base in Extremadura, incorporating simulators developed with Indra. The facility will provide operational and maintenance support for both aircraft and training systems.
The program consists of two phases. The initial phase beginning in 2028 will deliver 21 aircraft, with one serving as a prototype for avionics and mission equipment integration. Ground-based training systems are scheduled to begin operation during the 2029-2030 academic year.
In the second phase, all 30 aircraft will undergo conversion to Spanish standards, with deliveries of the complete SAETA II system scheduled between 2031 and 2035.
Spanish companies will handle key technology integration including GMV for navigation systems, Sener for data links, Aertec for interface units, Grupo Oesía for audio management, Orbital for mission recording, and Indra for identification systems.
"Spain achieves three strategic milestones: we ensure technology transfer in key areas, we obtain a deep-reaching industrial return, and we provide the programme with strategic sovereignty," said Marta Nogueira, Head of Business Spain at Airbus Defence and Space.
