Joby Aviation completes first electric air taxi flights in New York City
Joby Aviation Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) completed the first point-to-point electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi demonstration flights in New York City history, the company announced. The flights mark the beginning of a week-long campaign across the city's existing heliport network.
The aircraft departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport and landed at multiple Manhattan heliports, including Downtown Skyport and the West 30th Street and East 34th Street Heliports. These routes connect Lower Manhattan and Midtown to JFK in under 10 minutes, according to the company.
The flights were conducted as part of the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, established by executive order to accelerate commercial rollout of electric air transportation. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worked with Joby to enable the flights through the program.
"New York has always been a city that defines the future by demanding better," said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby. "This week, flying between JFK and Manhattan, we showed what the White House-backed eIPP initiative makes possible."
The demonstration utilized Joby's aircraft registration N545JX and showcased operations in FAA-controlled airspace. The company states its aircraft produces zero operating emissions and operates with lower noise levels than conventional helicopters.
Joby acquired Blade Air Mobility's passenger business in 2025, which served more than 90,000 passengers that year. The acquisition provides operational expertise and passenger infrastructure in Manhattan and at New York area airports.
The New York City Economic Development Corporation is working with partners to electrify the city's heliport infrastructure in preparation for commercial air taxi service. The flights demonstrate integration with existing transportation systems, with planned partnerships including Delta Air Lines and Uber.
Joby continues progress toward FAA certification, having recently flown its first conforming aircraft for Type Inspection Authorization. The New York flights are part of the company's 2026 Electric Skies Tour celebrating the United States' 250th anniversary.
