Bausch + Lomb launches PreserVision AREDS3 vitamins with B complex
Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE: BLCO) announced the publication of a review in Ophthalmology and Therapy examining B vitamins' role in reducing age-related macular degeneration risk and progression. The company has launched PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins, which combine B vitamins with clinically proven AREDS2 nutrients.
The published review synthesizes findings from more than 20 human studies evaluating nearly 30,000 individuals over two decades of research. The studies included randomized clinical trials, observational cohorts, and mechanistic studies examining various B vitamins, combinations, and concentrations.
Key findings from the review include a 34% reduction in AMD risk and 41% reduction in visually significant AMD with daily supplementation of specific concentrations of B6, B9, and B12 in the Women's Antioxidant and Folic Acid Cardiovascular Study. Post-hoc analyses of AREDS and AREDS2 studies showed decreased risk of progression to geographic atrophy and neovascular AMD with higher dietary intake of B6 and B9.
"Scientific evidence shows that AMD develops through a combination of oxidative stress, impaired mitochondrial function and chronic inflammation," said Julie Poteet, co-author of the paper and optometrist. "The data reviewed in this paper suggest that some B vitamins may play a critical role in regulating homocysteine, a compound linked to retinal damage and increased AMD risk."
PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins are now available in the U.S. and are expected to reach most major retailers by June 2026. The company stated it is planning a long-term clinical trial to evaluate the B-vitamin complex combined with AREDS2 nutrients.
John Ferris, president of Consumer at Bausch + Lomb, said the company is finalizing plans for the clinical trial while making the product available to patients and clinicians now.
