BlackSky secures $25 million defense contract for satellite imagery

April 22, 2026 8:31 AM

BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) announced it secured a competitive $25 million, multi-year contract with an international defense customer. The contract provides guaranteed access to the company's 35-centimeter Gen-3 satellite imagery and real-time AI analytics.

The agreement will utilize BlackSky's Spectra capabilities and Gen-3 constellation to support maritime domain awareness applications for the customer. The contract represents a transition from the customer's previous Early Access Gen-3 On-Demand service to a multi-year Assured contract.

"The proven operational performance of our 35-centimeter Gen-3 satellites is driving long-term commitments from major government customers that require mission critical intelligence from an industry-leading space-based intelligence platform," said Brian O'Toole, BlackSky CEO.

BlackSky currently operates four Gen-3 satellites in orbit. The company commissioned its most recent Gen-3 satellite in less than one week following its launch last month, according to the press release. The company has opened general availability of its Gen-3 services to its global customer base.

The Assured services provide guaranteed access and priority tasking capacity through BlackSky's satellite constellation over designated areas of interest. BlackSky's AI algorithms identify and classify vehicles, aircraft, vessels and other objects using the improved image clarity of Gen-3 satellites.

BlackSky operates a commercial satellite constellation and analytics platform that provides on-demand imagery and monitoring services. The company is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, and serves government agencies and commercial organizations globally.
