Syntec Optics secures $2M order for AI-powered AR defense cameras

April 21, 2026 8:05 AM

Syntec Optics Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTX) received a nearly $2 million order for integrated micro cameras designed for artificial intelligence-enabled augmented reality systems used by U.S. military personnel, according to a company statement.

The Rochester, New York-based optical manufacturer said the order represents an expansion into micro cameras following its ballistic optics product line announced in December 2025. The company indicated this initial deployment serves as a foundation for projected recurring annual orders throughout the decade.

"This expansion into micro cameras represents a big leap in our technical offering," said CFO Dean Rudy. "We are moving beyond the display layer into the sensing layer, leveraging nearly every capability within our 90,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility."

The micro cameras are designed to create digital overlays for augmented reality systems that provide soldiers with enhanced situational awareness. Matt Carey, VP of Business Development and former U.S. Marine, said the cameras are part of a Department of Defense effort to equip soldiers with advanced computer vision and sensor fusion capabilities.

Syntec stated the cameras must meet nanoscale precision requirements to prevent visual distortions that could cause discomfort for users. The devices are engineered to function under thermal stress and low-light conditions while maintaining small size requirements for soldier-worn systems.

The company operates a vertically integrated U.S. manufacturing facility that consolidates nanomachining, polymer molding, glass molding, and coating processes. Recent National Defense Authorization Act provisions mandate that critical defense optical technologies be manufactured domestically for national security purposes.

According to market data cited by the company, the defense augmented and virtual reality market was valued at $1.68 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach $4.34 billion by 2030.
